THE SECOND PRACTICE OF PSYCHOTHERAPY:
Beyond Models and Eclecticism

PAUL GIBNEY

August 2012

Can models and eclecticism prescribe, or describe, the activities of a successful experienced therapist? Is effective therapy all about learning the latest models and adhering to prescribed skills, strategies and techniques? Or is there something more needed to account for the everyday observations and lived experience of the successful therapist? This two-day training considers the Second Practice of Psychotherapy - a developmental achievement in the maturation of the therapist.

The Second Practice of Psychotherapy is characterised by a therapeutic space and attitude in which clinical practice crosses over from academic descriptions and scientific parameters, into a lived creative art form. When asked, many experienced psychotherapists acknowledge that the art and craft of therapy they practice in their consulting rooms bears little resemblance to the models of therapy they were taught at university, the institute, or in various rigorous training programmes. They may even say they no longer know what ÔmodelÕ they useÑ regardless of what others may perceive them to use, what rebate systems require them to use, or what their professional guild espouses. And the strange term 'eclecticism', which implies a thoughtful, calculated series of discriminations and choices between competing models, does not reflect their lived experience.
