What people have said about previous retreats...

"Thank you Paul. The retreat exceeded my expectations. It provided a safe space for us to speak the 'unspeakable' and discuss some of the paradoxes, hypocrisies and egos in our profession. You have helped me feel human again instead of a failure... please do more of these 'real' retreats in the future!"

"Really appreciated space to be genuine and feel others were too... enables me to feel a connection in my difference/aloneness."

"Palm Cove was an excellent location... lovely surroundings... I felt conflicted by wanting to sit in on the training and wanting to sit by the pool!"

"A thoughtfully conceived theme, beautifully executed, with some very valuable processes, relationships and outcomes for myself and for the group."

"I hope I can afford to do this throughout my career, as a constant and regular reflection and acknowledgment of my 'choice' to be a therapist. Gave me permission to think of my 'calling' and 'soul'. Thank you."

RETREAT PROGRAMME

This three-day retreat provides a therapeutic and reflective space within which participants can consider and explore the experiences and demands of being a therapist, and what it means to be a therapist and live a 'Therapeutic Life'. How does a person become a therapist? Can the ability to 'heal' be taught, or are 'healers' born with the essential traits of the craft? Or is therapy an activity that can be learnt - based on scientific principles, proven outcomes and reliable techniques - where we achieve 'becoming a therapist' through appropriate schooling and consequent professional association registration?

While both positions may be true and false, individual therapists find their own pathways to being a therapist. The becoming of a psychotherapist may involve family of origin roles, adolescent fascinations, accidental occupations, fortuitous part-time jobs, a significant mentor and a number of life-changing and/or life-threatening encounters in the early days of therapeutic practice. Somewhere, regardless of one's profession-of-origin, a decision is made, consciously or unconsciously, to pursue 'The Therapeutic Life'. From this defining moment, the orienting activities of a practitioner's life are to enter into dialogue with a confused and suffering 'other' in order to deepen understanding and create opportunities.

Philosophical questions, cognitive frameworks, bodies of technique, and the embodied experiences of emotional interactions, all wax and wane throughout each conversation through every day week month, year and decade of the therapist's life. How do we keep this process alive, both for our clients and ourselves?

Complemented by the peaceful tropical paradise of Palm Cove, North Queensland, the retreat will promote dialogue and reflection on 'The Therapeutic Life'. A variety of therapeutic and cultural frameworks will be drawn upon. Periods of interaction will be interspersed with time for relaxation, guided reflections, reverie, solitude and shared meals.

Dr. Paul Gibney will lead participants in discussions that will include:

  • How did I get here?
  • What is the role of chance and accidental fate in my choice of vocation?
  • What are the blessings and the curses of the role of therapist?
  • How do I manage the tension between what gives me 'inner meaning' and the external prescriptions of my profession or my chosen theoretical model?
  • What didn't they tell me in training?
  • What must I learn that cannot be taught?
  • How can I persist long after the excitement has faded?
  • What meanings have emerged for me overtime?
